Basic Info
Name:Sirius Black
Bio
Harry: You're not on here!"
Sirius: "I used to be there. My sweet old mother blasted me off after I ran away from home - Kreacher's quite fond of muttering that story under his breath."
Harry: "You ran away from home?"
Sirius: "When I was about sixteen. I'd had enough."
Harry: "Where did you go?"
Sirius: "Your dad's place. Your grandparents were really good about it; they sort of adopted me as a second son. Yeah, I camped out at your dad's during school holidays, and then when I was seventeen I got a place of my own. My Uncle Alphard had left me a decent bit of gold - he's been wiped off here too, that's probably why - anyway, after that I looked after myself. I was always welcome at Mr. and Mrs. Potter's for Sunday lunch though."
Harry: "But why did you...?"
Sirius: "Leave? Because I hated the whole lot of them: my parents with their pure-blood mania, convinced that to be a Black made you almost royal... my idiot brother, soft enough to believe them..."
Rosmerta: "Do you know, I still have trouble believing it. Of all the people to go over to the Dark Side, Sirius Black was the last I'd have thought... I mean, I remember him when he was a boy at Hogwarts. If you'd told me then what he was going to become, I'd have said you'd had too much mead."
Fudge: "You don't know the half of it. The worst he did isn't widely known."
Rosmerta: "The worst? Worse than murdering all those poor people, you mean? I don't believe that. What could possibly be worse?"
McGonagall: "You say you remember him at Hogwarts. Do you remember who his best friend was?"
Rosmerta: "Naturally. Never saw one without the other, did you? The number of times I had them in here - ooh, they used to make me laugh. Quite the double act, Sirius Black and James Potter."
Rosmerta: "Is it true he's mad, Minister?"
Fudge: "I wish I could say he was. I certainly believe his master's defeat unhinged him for a while. The murder of Pettigrew and all those Muggles was the action of a cornered and desperate man - cruel, pointless. Yet I met Black on my last inspection of Azkaban. You know, most of the prisoners in there sit muttering to themselves in the dark; there's no sense in them... but I was shocked at how normal Black seemed. He spoke quite rationally to me. It was unnerving. You'd have thought he was merely bored - asked if I'd finished with my newspaper, cool as you please, said he missed doing the crossword. Yes, I was astounded at how little effect the dementors seemed to be having on him - and he was one of the most heavily guarded in the place, you know. Dementors outside his door day and night."
Harry: "Pettigrew's dead! He killed him twelve years ago!"
Sirius: "I meant to, but little Peter got the better of me... not this time though!"
Lupin: "Sirius, No! Wait! You can't just do it like that - they need to understand - we've got to explain - "
Sirius: "We can explain afterwards!"
Lupin: "They've got a right to know everything! Ron's kept him as a pet! And Harry - you owe Harry the truth, Sirius."
Sirius: "All right, then. Tell them whatever you like. But make it quick, Remus. I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for..."
Hermione: "Er, Mr. Black? Sirius? If you don't mind me asking, how did you get out of Azkaban if you didn't use Dark Magic?"
Sirius: "I don't know how I did it. I think the only reason I never lost my mind is that I knew I was innocent. That wasn't a happy thought, so the dementors couldn't suck it out of me... but it kept me sane and knowing who I am... helped me keep my powers... so when it all became too much... I could transform in my cell... become a dog. Dementors can't see, you know. They feel their way toward people by feeding off their emotions... They could tell that my feelings were less human, less complex as a dog, but they thought I was losing my mind like everyone else in there, so it didn't trouble them. But I was weak, very weak, and I had no hope of driving them away from me without a wand..."
Timeline: Sirius is set before the end of "Prisoner of Azkaban" mostly while in prison, but might stray into his Hogwarts and pre-Azkaban years as well.
